Five-element acupuncture

The well known Chinese ‘yin-yang' –actually ‘taiji' –symbol shown below depicts the dual and complementary forces at work in the manifest world such as light and darkness. All that exists embodies an energy that has its perfect counterpart, both alternating constantly and subtly transforming into the other.

Comprehending the complex mechanism animating these energies, the ancient Chinese further described it through the paradigm of the five elements –or phases which rule the full cycle of life as it ordinates all form of existence, from the play of molecules to those of distant asters. Everything is therefore ‘made of' the five elements.

The observation of the seasons as they unfold in temperate climates provides a good illustration. The seasons engender and condition each other and an imbalance in one may cause havoc in the followings, affecting the planet and its beings in their activity, body, mind and spirit. So it goes with each element and the five main functions as they work within us. In a 24-hour cycle, our vital breath brings similar changes in our organs, functions and emotions. Though very subtle, Five-element acupuncture is very simple in its therapeutic process. First, it identifies which element(s) causes the imbalance. Then it clears the paths of communication between the elements and restores the natural flow, replenishing the whole dynamic principle.

Five-element acupuncture brings us in to harmony with ourselves because it acts where life unfolds and generates itself. Its action ripples through all the energy spheres of the individual, engendering a chain reaction of adjustments which bring people closer to good health and to their inner self. As the awareness of their body and inner world increases, they are prompted to crystallise the subtle inner modifications occurring by making according changes in life habits, and by giving up negative thinking patterns that were either cause or effect of ill-health.

Many have reported that this system of acupuncture stimulated their thirst for self discovery, inspiring them to embark on a true path of personal development. As we start to see beyond the limitations of ill-health and body-related issues, consciousness expands and the field of possibilities opens naturally.

The Five-element system of acupuncture is in lineage with the ancient daoist sages teaching. It has been traditionally passed from teachers to students.

The five elements and the seasons

In winter – Water element, pure yin –life is still, hidden in the depths, relying on its inner resources. When spring arrives – Wood element, yin/yang –plants restart their growth, the animal world wakes up, life activity resumes. Then all life forms blossom to maturity in the joyful explosion of summer, all-out season for plants, animals and people. It is the pure yang Fire and its ashes will produce the central element, Earth –as in the harvested fields. It is the plentiful ‘fifth' season, late summer that lasts about four weeks, each evoking one of the four other seasons. It is a time of equilibrium between yin and yang, of transition before the decreasing autumn – Metal element, yang/yin.
